“Readers are Leaders and Leaders are Readers“
Reading is fundamental to life. Today, I want to motivate you to give your kids something that will last them throughout their lives: the power of a read mind. The statistics on kids who read and are read to from an early age are astonishing. So, I want to motivate you to read more and watch less.
According to the National Education Society:
- The National Assessment of Educational Progress8 tested children nationwide for reading skills. The results for reading tests for fourth-grade students were: Below the most basic level 38 percent; Proficient 31 percent, and Advanced 7 percent.
- Twenty-six percent of children who were read to three or four times in the last week by a family member recognized all letters of the alphabet. This is compared to 14 percent of children who were read to less frequently.
- The Educational Testing Services reported that students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher math scores…
When I was a kid, I was a reader. I used to read so much that when my high school library was giving away books, they called me first to come get what I wanted from the give-away pile. I knew I wanted my son to also be an avid reader. For his baby shower, I asked that everyone to bring books as gifts and his centerpieces were old books. To this day, my son would rather read than watch television (unless it’s Elmo! Elmo is KING).
That’s why I was so happy to get this amazing book entitled “Raised up by Mrs. Manly and her L’s” by Sandra Evers-Manly. The book uses the letter “L” to teach kids amazing life lessons that carry on with them until adulthood. Sammy loved reading this book with me and repeating each life lesson with me.
