Influencer Terms You Need To Know

Influencer Terms: Whitelisting…non-compete…non-disclosure…what is that?

Every job has jargons that you need to know in order to succeed and do well in it. Influencer marketing has a lot of terms that are not only good to know but could help you secure even more coins in your bag. Today we are talking Influencer terms that you need to know and I’m starting off with my favorite one.

When I first started, I didn’t know any of these Influencer terms. Most of them I learned as I went along my journey. There are so many other influencer terms out there that I didn’t even hit on but I will do a part two to this list. I know this list is a great starting point for your Influencer Journey.

influencer terms

  1. Influencer: This influencer term is so nuanced and complicated. Influencer is someone who has influence and “has the ability to influence potential buyers of products or services by promoting or recommending the items via social media” (Oxford Dictionary). Everyone has influence but not everyone is an influencer.
  2. Deliverables: “This is the tangible or intangible good or service produced as a result of a project that is intended to be delivered to the client/customer” (wiki). As a creator, when a brand reaches out to you, they will ask for certain things in exchange for pay. For example, if they ask for two pictures, one video and rights to the content these services you have to produce for them are what we call deliverables.
  3. Content Brief: A content brief is what the brand sends you before or after a contract is signed. It gives you what the brand expects from you visual, aesthetic and caption-wise. They will lay out what they are looking for in terms of how you shoot, edit and caption the deliverables you send out, as well as the date the deliverables are due and anything else they need from you. It’s important to thoroughly read every brief you get.
  4. Engagement Rate: This is what is used to measure the level of interaction by your followers from content created by you. You can get your engagement rate by adding up your likes and comments, dividing it by your number of followers and multiplying that number by 100: Likes + Comments / followers x 100 = Engagement Rate
  5. Pitching: This influencer term is used when one makes a bid to obtain a contract with a brand or business. You can learn more about how to Pitch with this amazing blog post: PITCH LIKE A PRO
  6. Media Kit: An influencer media kit is really a testimonial or about me document that he/she can send out to brands for collaborations and during the pitching process. A great press kit includes amazing graphics, insights on your audience and demographics, brand work and more. You can read more about it in the blog post here: Media Kits 101
  7. Rate Sheet: A rate sheet for an influencer lists their prices per deliverables. A great rate sheet has a breakdown of several rates per deliverables and packages that a brand can pick from. Your rate sheet does not have to included in your media kit.
  8. Whitelisting: One of the most important term you will learn today. This term can be seen in your contract as an influencer or in the content brief. It means that you will allow the brand/business access to your social platforms in order for them to optimize paid media behind your content. So they can boost your content on your behalf with their brand money. As an influencer, you can charge for this service.
  9. Exclusivity: This term is also seen in an influencer contract and should be read carefully and negotiated. This term refers to when a brand requires you to not work with their competitors for a specified period of time. You can negotiate a pay for the term of the exclusivity clause.
  10. Usage Rights (Perpetuity): The last Influencer Term that can bring you more money and is negotiable. This term is when you grant a brand the right to use your content for a specific purpose and a specified amount of time. If the contract says perpetuity, that means they own your pictures forever and you don’t want to do that without getting paid. Watch out for this term and negotiate it or ask them to remove it from the contract.
  11. Affiliate Marketing/Platforms: Affiliate Marketing is how you earn money by marketing a brands products through your social media. Affiliate Platforms are the ways by which you can monetize or link the brands products. You can sign up for a list of platforms in this post: Affiliate Platforms You Should Know
  12. Call To Action: A call to action is the use of words to encourage people to action. You need to utilize CTA’s in your captions, stories and on all your social media platforms.
  13. Editorial Calendar: Editorial calendar is so important for Influencers. These calendars list major holidays or events that you will want to create content around and your own personal calendar of brand work and content creation you want to do. It will help keep you on task and ready with visuals for any major events in the year.
  14. Conversion: This influencer term refers to how you/your site can move people to your desired goal, such as filling out a form, or purchasing an product. Brands look for an Return on Interest (ROI) when it comes to brand partnership so conversion is important but remember, it’s not the only thing they look for when they hire you as an influencer.
  15. Reach/Impressions: my last influencer term is the total number of people that saw your content, impression is the number of times your content was displayed whether anyone interacted with it or not. Your reach is the unique amount of eyes on your post. Your impressions will be higher than your reach.

I hope these influencer terms will help you out on your journey. Make sure to list any other terms that I didn’t list below to help our anybody else that’s beginning their journey. Find me on Instagram at @funmiford and I will see you next week.
