Editing Apps 101: Sis, it’s as easy as 1, 2, download.
Nowadays, you don’t need an photo editor to get the pictures that you need. If you learn to take your pictures in the right lighting, the right angle and with a pretty good camera, editing is the icing on the cake. When I first started, I edited all my pictures directly from my phone. Nowadays, I pay for a photo editor because of client requirements but 30% of the pictures I post, are still edited directly from my Iphone.
Today, we’ll talk about some of my favorite photo editing apps and rate them from best to worst. So for any of you saying you want to wait until you have everything together, remember that some of us are using iPhones, Android phones and Facetune to do the exact same thing you’re waiting on the right conditions to start.
BEAUTY EDITING APPS
Beauty apps aren’t for everybody. Some people Love the natural look of an unpolished photo, but your Nigerian sister needs a little help because her makeup game isn’t that strong yet. I used one of my favorite editing apps to help smooth my skin, lighten my eyes, background and enhance my makeup. Can you guess which editing app I used for this photo?
- Facetune– This editing app allows you to smooth your face, remove blemishes, enhance your makeup, cinch that waist and so much more.
- Photo Wonder: This editing apps has amazing reviews. You can remove blemishes, change your background, add or enhance makeup and make collages. It does it all.
- Retrica: Over 100 filters to choose from. This editing app has a GIF maker, collage option and captures videos as well
- Honorable Mentions: Visage, CreamCam, Photoplastic, Beauty Booth
PHOTO ENHANCER EDITING APPS
There are times I take pictures of buildings, my family and even selfies and want a dark moody feel or an airy, light feel. These apps help me to enhance the lighting, contrast and much more on my photos.
This is an Impromptu quarantine shoot with my two boys after our morning shower. This picture was not a client/work photo so I wanted to edit it myself. I brought it into Lightroom, used a preset I purchased last year and tweaked it in Facetune and iPhoto. Here are some of my favorite photography editing apps:
- Lightroom: This app is the condensed version of the actual program. You can change the lighting, colors, and download/add presets to your pictures. There is so much that this editing app does.
- Photoshop: This editing application does almost all of the same things that LR does. The condensed app is free but if you have the actual program you can login and get access to more editing features.
- VSCOCAM: This app is my favorite when it comes to adding moody and dark filters. I love it for architectural posts and even food posts. The free version is limited in filters.
- Snapseed: This was one of my first editing apps I downloaded. It allows you to add filters, edit background, light, contract, colors and change the aspect ratio of your pictures. You can even upload RAW files and edit them on this app
- Quickshot: By far the editing app I use almost daily. This app is full of amazing filters for your photos. It lets you edit the lighting and background like LR and PS but it also lets you bring depth into your picture and add other cool effects
- Honorable Mentions: Pixaloop, Enlight Pixlr, Instasize, Afterlight 2
VIDEO EDITING APPS
I love videography. I was a videographer for eight years and worked with FCP and Premiere Pro. Nowadays, you only need your phone to get quality videos that are post worthy. We recently shot this #ootd video that was posted on Instagram. Everything, including the music was done in one editing app. Here are some that work so well you’ll never open your laptop to edit again.
- InShot: This editing app does it all. The free version is limited but if you pay the $14.99 for the year, you get access to so much more. You can crop the videos before you even bring them into the app, it allows you to add transitions and music and you can change the aspect ratio of the video.
- IMovie: Anyone with an Iphone has IMovie both on their computers and in their phones. Editing videos is so easy with this app because it pretty much does it for you. You can add words, transitions and music through the app.
- FilmoraGo: Another amazing video editing app. The free version is just as amazing as the paid version. Edit photos, add music, add words and crop as you need.
- Honorable Mentions: Filmmaker Pro, Power Director, Adobe Premier Rush, GoPro App
COLLAGES & INSTAGRAM EDITING APPS
I always try to curate my Instagram page and stories so they look amazing when you enter my world. My stories are as creative as my actual feed. I use a lot of editing apps to put up quotes, good morning messages and pictures. Here are a few of my favorite collage making apps and “instagrammable” apps.
- Photo Grid: Grid making app. I mean you can add over 16 photos and more into the grid and it allows you to pick which platform you will be posting on and the sizing you want
- Layout: Another editing app that allows you to edit photos and put them into amazing collages
- Over: I use this app to make amazing graphics and write over pictures and backgrounds. It also gives you free templates that you can just change around to fit your needs
- Mojo: This app is my instagram story go-to. It allows me to animate pictures and graphics, add animated or static words to post and much more
- Honorable Mentions: Unfold, Canva, Page Layout, Foodie
I hope these photo editing apps will galvanize you to stop waiting for all the equipment and just begin creating content. There is so much that your phones can do now with little to no money.
